And so it finally happened – the world’s best mixed doubles pair over the last six years claiming the only major title to have evaded their grasp – the Olympic gold.
Never again will Zheng Si Wei and Huang Ya Qiong have to answer why the super-achieving three-time world champions fell just short of Olympic gold. That was three years ago, at Tokyo 2020, when the favourites fell in a tremendous final contest to compatriots Wang Yi Lyu and Huang Dong Ping.
The last three years they have often been asked about that match, and they had promised to go all the way in Paris. They made good on that promise in the final with the same domineering style with which they have rolled over most opponents.
Kim Won Ho and Jeong Na Eun, despite the closeness of their 3-4 career record against the Chinese, just didn’t have the answers in the final.
Zheng was a tornado from the back while Huang provided the calm, around which he could throw the biggest punches, most of which went unanswered. The final point won, and with the gold medal around their necks, Huang had a surprise in store – a ring from fiancé Liu Yu Chen, which she accepted in front of the full-house crowd.
“This is the biggest dream I’ve had. I think a lot but now my mind has gone blank,” Zheng said.
“All my family is here, they bought the tickets last year to come here. This might be my last Olympics so I had to bring my family here because they give me strength. My family’s support brings me more strength than I could expect.
“We prepared as much as we possibly could. We used every skill we have. I focused all of my energy on this Olympic Games. Ya Qiong gave me strength.”
