“The crowd had me so motivated. I had my family and friends here and I have never ever experienced a crowd this like before. There were times when I was a bit down so I asked for their encouragement and they gave it to me immediately. It’s a huge ‘wow’ moment. I want to dedicate this gold medal to my uncle who died a few weeks ago. That’s why I showed the champagne corks at the end.” – Lucas Mazur (SL4)
“This is so crazy to win a bronze medal at my first Paralympics. It’s a first medal for Switzerland in Para badminton and that’s amazing. I have beaten a lot of good players to reach this point, such as Pilar Jauregui Cancino. When I looked at my group I didn’t think getting here would be possible but with this bronze medal, I have the belief.” – Ilaria Renggli (WH2)
“I needed about 20 minutes to calm down after winning gold for Indonesia before speaking to media. I needed to think, there were so many things going in my head and it’s an overwhelming feeling. Leani (Ratri Oktila) told me how proud she is of and what a great partner I have been this week and that made me cry even more. So many tears of joy.” – Hikmat Ramdani (SL3-SU5)
“This is the first Paralympic medal for China in the new category (mixed doubles in SH6). I couldn’t be happier. I think this will be big news in China where badminton is a very popular sport. I was actually really nervous at the net and was trying to keep my hand steady when playing shots but I’m so thankful to Lin, he was Superman at the back of the court, ha ha.” – Li Fengmei (SH6)
“It’s crazy, crazy, crazy. I’m 60-years-old, you know? After Tokyo 2020 when I didn’t medal, I was very sad. Now I’m so happy, I can’t tell you how much in English. I had to believe I could do this throughout my training. I had to know that living in a campervan for six years to train was worth it and it is. I’m not sure if you can convince me to go for LA2028. My wife won’t like it.” – Thomas Wandschneider (WH1)
“Yesterday was my 29th birthday. I kept it quiet. My family knew of course but my focus was on getting the gold medal. It was tough in the final, it was my hardest match of Paris 2024. Leani and I always have some close battles. With the gold medal around my neck, I can say that this is the best birthday present ever.” – Cheng He Fang (SL4)
“I think this is great for Norway and badminton in my country. I’m delighted. I am still processing it. I had to take some time before coming to this interview to get my thoughts together, and I’m still trying, ha ha. I didn’t know the Prince of Norway was going to be here. After I won the bronze medal I looked up and there he was. What a surprise.” – Helle Sofie Sagoy (SL4)
“This is very important for me, also for my team and for Brazil. This is historic. I had lost two matches at the beginning but I had to dig deep and put my mind into this as badminton is such a mental game and now I am a Paralympic bronze medallist. This is big.” – Vitor Tavares (SH6)
“My son is with my family in Indonesia because we don’t have much money for him to come to Paris. I would love to have shared this gold medal moment with him. All the training over the years have been worth it. I had to do this for Indonesia and for Para badminton.” – Leani Ratri Oktila (SL3-SU5)
“I’m a history maker for Nigeria and for Africa in badminton. No-one has done this before for Nigeria and I’m glad I was the one to do it but this is just the start. I plan to go for gold at LA2028. I know I can do it.” – Mariam Eniola Bolaji (SL3)
“I’m happy to win Malaysia’s first Paralympic gold medal at Paris 2024. SU5 is getting tougher and tougher. The SU5 guys are young and I’m an old man. I’m glad I could win and deal with the pressure it comes with. I had messages of support from Lee Chong Wei, Loh Kean Yew and Goh Liu Ying before the match.” – Cheah Liek Hou (SU5)
“I can’t believe it because it happened in a fraction of a second. It was going close, 20-all, 21-all, and then suddenly two quick points, and I’m the Paralympic champion. I don’t know how to express what I’m feeling, but looking at the crowd, my coaches, my teammates, everybody from India, it feels amazing.” – Nitesh Kumar (SL3)
